Tutoring for Grades 7-12 in Reading and Composition

Tutoring sessions are personalized to the student's specific needs and include many of the same elements as the classes taught.

  • Reading on all levels for comprehension and application
  • Annotation and analysis of literature and other documents
  • Inspectional and syntopical* reading for researching a topic
  • Practical writing skills needed in school and the workplace
  • Resume and letter writing
  • Organizing and developing an essay
  • Researching and writing a formal paper: finding and evaluating sources, taking notes, outlining, formatting, citing
  • Note-taking and outlining as methods for reading and writing
  • Proofreading and editing

*The four levels of reading are described by Mortimer J. Adler in How to Read a Book.

"Marlys' calmness, professionalism, and organizational skills allow her to deliver a well-rounded language arts curriculum with grace . . . With carefully chosen words, she relays feedback on all returned assignments, so that the student learns with dignity where his or her strengths and weaknesses lie."

"I feel she genuinely cares for her students and wants them to succeed academically. She pushes them to excellence and doesn't settle for mere accumulation of information by her students, but desires that what she teaches sinks in, and that they are able to apply what they learn to their own lives."
